Summer Camp: The Precious Smile That Lasts Forever (09/08)

This summer, over 1,200 children with special needs took part in Ezer Mizion's Summer Camp Program where they had a wonderful time while their parents enjoyed a well deserved break.

In many homes summer vacation means going to the beach, the pool, camp, and family trips as the excitement of vacation fills the air.  In other homes families wait for a different type of vacation: the ten days that their special needs child and sibling will be away at an Ezer Mizion Camp and the rest of the family will be able to get a much needed respite.

Ezer Mizion's summer camps are carefully planned for the special needs children with many fun and exciting activities and trips to popular attractions:  amusement park, water parks, performances featuring top entertainers, and other exciting activities round the clock - all coordinated with precision logistics that take into account any and all possible contingencies that could occur.  Ten days of funtogether with unbridled joy.

The project successfully combines, with extreme sensitivity and unlimited warmth and love for each individual child, extensive planning while ensuring optimum health and environmental considerations to match the specific condition of every child.

The staff has all relevant details of each camper immediately accessible, providing them with the answer to any question or medical information that may be needed during camp. This ensures the physical, emotional and medical safety for each camper and that no child deviates from his or her specific requirements.  This careful attention to detail allows the campers to enjoy the activities securely, without confusion or disorientation.

Every year the same problems of limited space and budget re-emerge limiting the amount of children that can be accommodated.  NOT THIS YEAR!!!!   The Summer Camp in Netanya added an additional camp session so that an additional 180 children could partake of the camp experience. That means another 180 families also had their well-deserved vacation.

At Ezer Mizion we concentrate on introducing innovative concepts to bring genuine joy to these children and to put smiles on their faces.  So, included in the camp program are carnivals and parades where the children dressed up and marched around with pride and confidence, totally thrilled, their hearts overflowing with fun and joy.

Nach-Nachman Merrymakers were invited to the camps, where their unique style of singing and dancing infused the children with atmosphere and got them to dance along in sheer bliss.

At a pizza making event, a professional Pizza Chef baked delectable pizza with the campers and the delighted children were able to immediately taste the fruits of their own labor.  Helicopter rides, a trip to the kotel, a visit to the zoo, a police dog unit demonstration, and more made up the multifaceted program of the different camps.

These are only a few of the dozens of special activities that were meticulously planned in perfect coordination and balanced for the campers' specific recreational needs and abilities.

The cost of operating these Summer Camps for summer season 2008 was close to one million dollars. At Ezer Mizion we all know that the precious smiles of our special needs
children are priceless and no budget is too high to achieve
this wonderful goal.

 A Salute to our Volunteers
Every special needs child is accompanied by a volunteer counselor at camp. Children with especially difficult challenges have two volunteers. Our volunteers are exceptional teenagers and young adults who have chosen to devote their summer vacation to spend time with children with severe physical, cognitive and social limitations. They dedicate themselves to ensuring that each child is able to enjoy the camp experience despite their limitations and to the full extent of their abilities. They are a major ingredient in the success of this vital program, showering the children with attention, support and warmth. "Believe me", says Efi, a veteran volunteer, I am waiting to come back next year. We work very hard at camp but we love it. We all know that we get a lot more from our campers than we could ever give them!"
