Pained. Contorted. Paralyzed. Silent.<\/p>\n
Will I succeed?<\/p>\n
What is success?<\/p>\n
Will I be able to bring a tiny ray of joy into a life of blackness\u2026misery\u2026despair<\/p>\n
Will she smile?<\/p>\n
Does she know how?<\/p>\n
Will I help her to leave the planet of wretchedness, even for a moment?<\/p>\n
Her mother also sits across from me, poised with anticipation<\/p>\n
She is a mother<\/p>\n
Therefore, she hopes<\/p>\n
Despite all, despite everything \u2013 this is her little girl, she is alive and so perhaps\u2026<\/p>\n
Because the game and the smile are the balm to soothe a wounded spirit, even if it is just for a moment\u2026 a shadow of joy.<\/p>\n
And where am I, the mentor, in all this?<\/p>\n
I see the anguish and I feel<\/p>\n
I feel from the depths within me<\/p>\n
I feel a desire to give, and give, and give some more.<\/p>\n
And I face myself and ask<\/p>\n
You, the mentor\u2026 She is so very sick\u2026 How can you do it? Have you lost your sensitivity?…And if not, does her pain not sap your strength\u2026leaving you feeble\u2026fragile\u2026with nothing left to give?<\/p>\n
My soul responds\u2026<\/p>\n
True, she is so very sick but I do not refrain from being there, from seeing it all, from sharing her suffering<\/p>\n
I see..I share\u2026 and behold I can give<\/p>\n
Her pain becomes my own<\/p>\n
Myself becomes she\u2026and she becomes me<\/p>\n
Her pain is my own<\/p>\n
And so I give and give. I give\u2026 to myself<\/p>\n

She was five years old when she died in July. In the beginning she was very responsive, cooperative and full of vitality. With time, as she lost her capacities and became less responsive, she left the people around her wondering about how much they were indeed doing for her.
