Even severe pain would not prevent her from helping to save a life<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Four years ago she had registered with Ezer Mizion\u2019s Bone Marrow Registry<\/strong>, never expecting to actually be contacted. The call came as a complete surprise. It was the registry<\/strong> informing her that she was a possible genetic match<\/strong> for a young child. She could save his life!\u00a0 She was glad she was home to receive the call. Normally, she would be at work and wouldn\u2019t have received the message until evening, perhaps even a couple of days later when she would get around to checking her messages. But today she was home and she told the caller to send someone right over.<\/p>\n

Further testing had to be done and, for that, blood would have to be drawn. \u201cLet\u2019s get started right away,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t want that child and his parents to suffer a minute more than they have to.\u201d The Registry<\/strong> staff was grateful that she didn\u2019t ask to procrastinate and made arrangements for the blood to be drawn that very day so that testing can begin.<\/p>\n

The phlebotomist continues the story.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was given the address and dispatched to her home to begin proceedings. I rang the bell and waited. No one came to the door. Another wait. \u201cPerhaps I was given the wrong information\u2026 Maybe she\u2019s not home\u2026\u201d With my finger poised to ring again, the door finally was opened. \u201cI\u2019m so sorry to have kept you waiting,\u201c she tried to smile through what was obviously a lot of pain. \u201cIt\u2019s a bit hard for me to get around these days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy? What\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, it\u2019s nothing much. I had surgery on my leg a couple of days ago. A bunch of screws and plates are holding me together right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The phlebotomist gasped. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you say something?! We could have put off drawing the blood until you\u2019re feeling more up to it!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think to mention it. It\u2019s a small thing compared to what the child\u2019s family must be going through. Just some pain. No big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her face contorted as she grasped hold of furniture to help her navigate to the blessed relief of a chair. The phlebotomist drew the blood, wondering if angels actually have real blood in their veins.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe parents must be terrified,\u201d she said, \u201cnot knowing if their child will live to grow up. I wanted them to have an answer as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith a grimace which was hard to hide, she tried to stand in order to walk me out but I didn\u2019t allow to do so,\u201d the phlebotomist told her story to the staff members upon her return.<\/p>\n
