Overexcited. We\u2019ll take him to someone who helps excited <em>chatanim<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michal was red-eyed and very mixed up. She called her parents and told them that they\u2019re going there by taxi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They came to a room bearing a sign in English: Psychiatrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michal knew simple English from high school, and she understood this word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The man \u201cwho helps <em>chatanim<\/em>\u201d (GROOMS) spoke primarily in English. He gave the <em>chatan <\/em>an injection, and that\u2019s how he helped him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>chatan<\/em>, who until then had chattered and talked and babbled without a stop (which he did all the time, until Michal longed for just one thing \u2013 some quiet), fell silent all at once and became very quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou see,\u201d the <em>shvigger (<\/em>mother-in-law<em>) <\/em>said, \u201cit helps instantly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abba came there. He parked the car in a \u201cno parking\u201d spot, opposite the driveway, and quickly came out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said to the <em>shvigger <\/em>and the <em>chatan<\/em>. \u201cMichal is coming home with me. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her father, a usually gentle and soft-spoken person, the type who doesn\u2019t take fiery initiatives and never makes bombastic announcements, simply took her to the car and drove off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They remained standing there, in shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michal started crying softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d Abba said again. \u201cIn the Gemara Talmud) , they call it a \u2018<em>mekach ta\u2019ut<\/em> (a transaction based on an error) .\u2019 Nobody warned us that he has a mental illness and that he is under regular psychiatric care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd if it\u2019s a <em>mekach ta\u2019ut<\/em>, then the marriage isn\u2019t valid?\u201d Michal asked, her eyes red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll still need an official procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve barely gotten married and I\u2019m getting divorced?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abba stroked her hand gently. \u201cBetter now, Michal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they got home, Michal went to her room, unseeing like a horse with visors on the right and on the left. She entered the room that was still her room, the bed that was still her bed, put the pillow over her head, and slept for fifteen uninterrupted hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The days passed, and the <em>to\u2019en rabbani <\/em>(rabbinical advisory group) wasn\u2019t idle. He wrote up an agreement \u2014 a contract \u2014 with many subsections: what each one gives and what each one takes. At first, it didn\u2019t interest Michal in the least. And then, one day, she asked the <em>to\u2019en rabbani <\/em>to put things on hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust wait with it. I\u2019ll explain everything. Now I\u2019m rushing off to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was a \u201cfill-in\u201d teacher for first grade and she enjoyed the girls\u2019 purity and radiance, their innocence and their honest desire to hear and to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t yet know how to fool around and bother the teacher,\u201d she said to her mother one winter afternoon. Ima (Mommy)sat at the gleaming counter and whispered <em>segulot <\/em>from a little <em>sefer (holy book) . <\/em>It\u2019s not that she wanted to disturb Ima, but that was what her mother did most of the day these days, whisper <em>segulot <\/em>and <em>tefillot<\/em>. Michal understood that Abba hadn\u2019t yet spoken with Ima about her desire to put the proceedings on hold.
