In response to an urgent request by the Ministries of Social Services and Health, Ezer Mizion recently opened a rehabilitative day care center at its national headquarters for one to three year-old children suffering from autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The center operates five days a week from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, as well as Friday mornings.
The tots in the program enjoy a warm, personal, and loving relationship with the dedicated professional staff members (a nearly 3:1 staff-child ratio!), that include a teacher, expert communications clinicians, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists, as well as developmental aides who specialize in early childhood education. The group framework encourages social interaction and promotes communication and social skills in the children, none of whom are verbal yet. In the four months since the center was opened, 85% of the children have registered major progress. Some of the children even play together outside of the center framework – a remarkable achievement for autistic children.
